A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER - Great Food Near and Far

The summer is here and the farmers markets are buzzing and producing all of our local favorites. It's peach season right now. New Jersey is bursting with those delicious globes of sweetness. If you haven't tried a donut peach yet, now is your chance. Donut peaches are fruit with a dimpled middle and are 2 to 3 bites of peach perfection. They are on the mild side and very fragrant and are the perfect afternoon snack. Even though they are delicious as is, if you're like me and feel that even the perfect ingredient still needs to be tweaked, here's what you do. Toss one on the grill for a couple of minutes over high heat, then drip a couple of drops of balsamic reduction and eat it with puff pastry or a croissant. It will be a sweetness delight.

I pretty much live off of what I find at the farmers markets, but some things you just can't get there. A year ago on my honeymoon in Hawaii I heard about a fruit of nearly mythical description called a Mangosteen. Mangosteens are a tropical Pacific fruit with a hard purple shell and a segmented fruit inside. The shell is roughly the size of a racquet ball, and the edible inside is in pieces and looks kind of like a clementine. One segment has a large, inedible pit. The eerily white segments have a creamy texture and a b right fruity taste. The Mangosteen was a favorite of the Queen of Hawaii, back when the island had such things. And thanks to our nation's incredible supply chain and a recent change in import laws, we can find Mangosteens at various fruit markets in Chinatown.

So far the Mangosteen is still to novel, delicious and expensive ($18 for a bag of 6) for me to brave making something with them. I've been content to eat them as is and maybe put a couple segments on a salad.

Eat well!
